In ancient Greece, a sumposion was an aristocratic banquet where men discussed philosophical and political issues and recited poetry. It began as a warrior feast and rooms were designed specifically for the proceedings. The participants (all male aristocrats) wore garlands and reclined on couches while slave boys served them wine. Prayers opened and closed the meetings; sessions sometimes ended with a procession in the streets. In Plato's Symposium, Socrates, Aristophanes, Alcibiades, and others discuss the nature of love.
